If you have already purchased some of our Mulled Wine Mix, and you are looking for a reminder of how we make ours, then here are some of our "Tips and Tricks" to help you make the most of your purchase.

Mulled wine tips and tricks!

  • Warm through for 45mins – 1 hour using the lowest temperature on your stove top or even better, use a crock pot.
  • Use cask wine – we find any cheap four litre cask of Cabernet Merlot, Dry Red or Shiraz ideal for use with one single sachet, and you can use a combination of red and white.  We often add old half empty bottles of white wine to make up the four litres and it works beautifully.
  • Cheap cleanskins work well also – use 5 bottles per sachet.
  • The sugar quantity used is variable – we suggest that you add one cup and taste to see how much is ideal to suit your own requirements.  We usually add 1 and a third cups of dark brown cooking sugar (or raw sugar) and everyone seems to like it.   White sugar also works well.
  • Warming through gently with the lid on at a low temperature  (steam and no bubbles) will help retain some of the original alcohol level.  Do not boil, because if you do you will have evaporated off virtually all of the alcohol.
  • If you do accidentally boil it – don’t panic!   It still tastes the same, just less alcohol. Our solution is to simply add more alcohol!  An easy suggestion is to spike before serving with brandy, vodka, rum, or whatever you have handy.
  • Orange peel or slivered almonds etc, are nice add when serving, but if you are refrigerating some to save for later, we suggest that you keep the basic mix without any additives to assist in keeping it longer.
  • You can cook with mulled wine – poached pears, apples or apricots are delicious.  Some people even enjoy it with ice cream!
  • Keeps very well for several weeks in the refrigerator.  You can decant the fruit/spice mix out of the wine before storing, or leave it at the bottom of the bottle or jug as it does enrich the mulled wine over time.
  • You can reheat mulled wine numerous times, or even serve it chilled as a refreshing red wine punch!
